Grain Carrier
May carried grain and flour for 75 years
Built by Canns she is the last of two existing Thames Sailing Barges built to carry wheat and grain. Her sister barge GLADYS is the only other example of these once familiar vessels.
They had a charmed life due to the nature of their cargo as there could never be a risk to the precious load from water through the decks or hull.
MAY is the only Thames Sailing Barge left never to have been derigged and used as a lighter, motor barge or left to degrade. She is a very special lady who we owe it to her to try and give her a future.
